A message for our patients
We remain open to our patients. We have measures in place to ensure we can safely treat our patients, including asking staff, patients and visitors to wear a face covering (unless exempt), patients attending appointments on their own where possible, and observing social distancing throughout the hospital.
It is safe and important to attend your appointment and seek help when needed. Unless you hear from us directly, please attend as normal.
Feel unwell? Please do not attend hospital
We would ask that if you have a new continuous cough, a high temperature (of 37.8 degrees or higher), have a loss of taste or smell, or if you live with someone who has any symptom of COVID-19 that you please do not come to the hospital. You can find more information on how to protect yourself or to check if you need help on the NHS website.
Please do not come to the hospital if you have tested positive for COVID or are self-isolating due to contact with someone who tested positive. Instead contact the number on your letter and we will rearrange your appointment for you.
If you are fit and well and due to attend an appointment please do so unless you have been advised otherwise.
All patients and visitors must wear a face covering (unless they are exempt)
Patients and visitors should please wear a face covering at all times. If you have your own please bring it with you – it needs to cover your nose and mouth. If you do not have one when you come to QVH please see a member of staff who will provide you with one. Find out more here.
For some people, wearing a face covering may be difficult due to physical or mental health conditions. In these instances, please let our staff know, ideally before your appointment.
If you are a deaf or hearing impaired, our staff have a range of communication options to ensure that they can communicate effectively with you. This might include writing things down.

Visiting patients on our wards
To help keep our staff and patients safe, we have reviewed arrangements for visiting friends and family members who are staying with us overnight. We know it is important for you to visit your loved ones and there are some circumstances where one visitor (a family member or friend) will be permitted to visit. Attending an appointment. Is it ok to bring someone with you?
Please can we ask that patients come into the hospital on their own. If someone comes with a patient, for example to drive, they should please stay in the car. We have reduced the seating available in our waiting rooms to enable social distancing and may need to ask additional family members or friends to wait outside. If you need to be accompanied to your appointment, for example someone to translate or support if you have a hearing impairment, please let our team know when you arrive.
Children can be accompanied by one adult only. Children will be allowed to accompany an adult to an appointment when there is no other available alternative.
Many of our specialisms are offering online or telephone consultations which can be carried out remotely. If appropriate you will be offered one of these options. Find out more about our online consultations here.
If you are coming to us for an outpatient appointment and would like to know more about what to expect we have created this information leaflet. Toilets for patients are open throughout the hospital.
All GP and outpatient referrals are by appointment only – we are currently unable to accept walk-in requests for x-rays, CT scans, MRIs, ultrasound or CBCT. Urgent referrals are still being seen. Patients referred from another department within QVH for an x-ray can also be seen.

From Monday 22 February, routine face to face orthodontic appointments restarted. The team are in the process of contacting patients either by telephone or letter to offer new appointments. Please be patient with us as we have a triage system in place and you will be contacted as soon as possible.
Please note that the ‘virtual emergency service’ is no longer running now that normal face to face clinics have resumed. If you are experiencing pain or discomfort from your braces please call the Orthodontic Department on 01342 414161.
Test and Trace
In line with national guidance we are displaying QR code posters in some areas where you may be waiting. Please use your mobile phone to scan the QR code if you are waiting in one of these areas so that you can be contacted by Test and Trace if needed. Please note you will need to download the NHS Test and Trace app onto your phone first. If you do not have a phone please speak to one of the team who can provide you with a paper form to complete.
- Our Spitfire Restaurant is open Monday-Friday 7.30am-4pm, and at weekends and bank holidays 7.30-3pm, with limited seating inside and outside. You can purchase sandwiches, hot food, drinks and snacks.
- Our Hurricane Café is open Monday-Friday 8am-5pm and Saturday 9am-4pm for takeaway coffee, cake and sandwiches.
Please can we ask you to observe a social distance when queuing and follow the one way system that has been introduced. Patients are encouraged to please bring a bottle of water with them.
QVH Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre
We have temporarily closed QVH Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre until further notice but the team are still available to listen, support and provide information over the phone. Please call 01342 414369 and leave a message, and one of the team will call you back.
