Work begins on a new Community Diagnostic Centre building at Queen Victoria Hospital

Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (QVH) is beginning construction on its new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) building, backed by a £8.4 million investment from NHS England.

QVH already offers a wide range of diagnostic tests and scans including MRI, CT, ultrasound, X‑ray, lung function and echocardiograms. The new dedicated building will enable the hospital to not only offer a “one stop shop” of diagnostic services but increase what it is currently able to provide. This will help reduce the time patients wait for essential tests which will inform their diagnosis and treatment.

The project aligns to the NHS’s Ten‑Year Health Plan for England, which sets out a shift from hospital‑based to community‑based care, from analogue to digital, and from reactive to preventative approaches. By enabling earlier and faster diagnosis, the CDC will support patients to access the appropriate treatment before problems escalate, and support the wider healthcare system.

Abigail Jago, Acting Chief Executive at QVH, said:
“Beginning construction of our dedicated Community Diagnostic Centre building is a milestone for QVH and our community. By bringing faster, more accessible diagnostics closer to home, we are delivering on our commitment to reducing waiting times and enhancing patient experience.”

Dr Ian Francis, Deputy Chief Medical Officer at QVH, added:
“Having multiple diagnostic tests available in a single visit will streamline care pathways, improve outcomes and make the healthcare system more responsive to patient needs.”

Thanks to NHS England’s investment, the CDC will not only house existing services but scale up what the hospital is currently able to offer. The Trust is already leading the way nationally around digital connectivity for CDCs, meaning test results can be shared in real time with primary and secondary care teams, ensuring faster diagnosis and treatment pathways.

Logan Construction has been appointed as contractor for the build which is expected to open in the summer
