Dr Edward Pickles appointed as Medical Director

Dr Edward Pickles, who has been a consultant anaesthetist at the Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust since 2006, has been appointed as Medical Director providing clinical leadership at Board level.

He qualified in medicine from the University of Dundee, and then trained in anaesthesia in Yorkshire and London, including Kings College Hospital and Great Ormond Street.

Dr Pickles is the Queen Victoria Hospital clinical lead for paediatrics and is also currently the director of medical education, responsible for ensuring the quality of education provided for our doctors in training.

Dr Pickles said: “I have worked at the Queen Victoria Hospital for more than ten years, and from day one I knew that it was somewhere special. The value that this hospital places on staff is exceptional, as is the teamwork and pride that enable us to deliver excellent care to patients.  I am looking forward to working with all staff to ensure we continue to offer the safe, effective and timely care our patients have come to expect.”

Dr Pickles will take over the Medical Director role from Dr Steve Fenlon, whose clinical and managerial contribution to the Queen Victoria Hospital over 16 years has played a major part in the Trust’s success.

Richard Tyler, Queen Victoria Hospital Chief Executive said: “I am delighted to announce Dr Edward Pickles’ appointment. He is an experienced clinical leader who knows the Trust well. I am confident that he will keep patient care at the centre of all that we do and build on our proud heritage as we address the challenges and opportunities ahead.

“On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Dr Stephen Fenlon for his exceptional contribution to the Trust as Medical Director for the past three years. Stephen has made a real impact during his time at Queen Victoria Hospital. He will be missed greatly and I wish him the very best in this next stage of his career.”

Dr Edward Pickles will take over from Dr Stephen Fenlon in October 2016.
