Outstanding staff recognised with patient awards

When the Queen Victoria Hospital asked its patients (past and present) to nominate staff they felt went the extra mile for them during their treatment or appointments, they were overwhelmed with the response.

The ask was for the hospital’s annual patient experience award which this year, because of such stiff competition, had joint winners: Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Tania Cubison, and Staff Nurse, Lorraine Loosley.

In fact the hospital received the most nominations ever from its patients!

Tania Cubison’s nominee said she had “changed my life” following an operation at the hospital, “she put me at ease and was very accommodating. She had an excellent bedside manner, always with a smile on her face.”

Whilst Lorraine Loosley was described by her nominee as “my real life Florence Nightingale” after the care and treatment she gave a patient in the hospital’s dressing clinic.

Jo Thomas, Director of Nursing and Quality at Queen Victoria Hospital (QVH) explains why the awards are so important: “We hope that every member of staff makes the experience of our patients a positive one. Whether it’s coming to QVH for treatment or as a visitor. But we know some of our staff are extra special. Tania and Lorraine are both very deserving winners and we’d like to congratulate them both and all of our staff who were nominated – it’s a real testament to the positive impact our staff make when patients take the time to contact us.”

Speaking about winning the award Tania said: “Patients are the focus of all we do and to receive such positive feedback makes it all worthwhile. I was delighted to receive this award and have been really touched by the reaction of other QVH staff to the announcement.”

This was echoed by Lorraine who said: “It’s nice to be recognised for what I see as just doing my job. To be nominated made me feel proud; however to win exceeded my expectations.”
