Inspiring orthodontic consultant praised by patients at awards
Thursday 1st November 2018
Nominations from patients (past and present) for the annual Queen Victoria Hospital’s Outstanding Patient Experience Award exceeded all expectations this year. People were asked to nominate staff they felt went the extra mile for them during their treatment or appointments, with Dr Lindsay Winchester, Consultant Orthodontist, chosen as one of this year’s winners.
Lindsay has worked as a consultant at the hospital for 24 years but it was a combination of her clinical skills and being an inspiration to budding future dentists that really stood out.
Queen Victoria Hospital provides a consultant-led orthodontic service as well as specialist care for patients requiring orthodontic and jaw surgery; cleft lip and palate care; hypodontia (care for patients with multiple missing teeth) buried/impacted teeth; and sleep apnoea (care for patients with sleep disordered breathing).
Comments from Lindsay’s nominations included: “I came under Lindsay’s care at the age of 15 when I was having difficulty eating due to my irregular bite. Her dedication to her patients has been an inspiration and my recent surgery has shown me how the orthodontic and maxillofacial teams can transform people’s lives. Lindsay has transformed me from a withdrawn adolescent to a confident young woman who has just begun studying dentistry.” And “Dr Winchester has been involved for six years in our son’s major orthodontic work and jaw surgery and her professionalism, attitude and behaviour is phenomenal. The way she speaks to us, explains things, listens, reassures us and also how she speaks to her staff and colleagues is wonderful.”
Lindsay’s win was announced on the night of the QVH Staff Awards by a special film one of her patients, Anna, helped create, explaining in her own words why she was driven to nominate. You can watch it now on YouTube https://youtu.be/NYB-rX6M7Zg
Commenting on her award Lindsay said: “I am really honoured and thrilled to be given this award. It means more than anything to be nominated by patients, as without a doubt this is the most rewarding part of my job, making a difference to people’s lives.”
Jo Thomas, Director of Nursing and Quality at Queen Victoria Hospital (QVH) explains why the awards are so important: “We hope that every member of staff makes the experience of our patients a positive one. But we know some of our staff are extra special. Lindsay is a very deserving winner and we’d like to congratulate her and all of our staff who were nominated – it’s a real testament to the positive impact our staff make when patients take the time to contact us.”
Queen Victoria Hospital would like to thank everyone who took time to nominate members of staff for the award and would encourage patients to continue passing on their feedback through its Patient Advice and Liaison service (PALS) by email at qvh.pals@nhs.net, or its Facebook and Twitter channels.
