Outstanding Patient Experience Award for consultant praised by patients

A Queen Victoria Hospital (QVH) consultant has been recognised by patients after receiving the Trust’s 2026 Outstanding Patient Experience Award.

Brian Bisase, Maxillofacial/Head and Neck Cancer Surgeon, was nominated by a patient who described the confidence, kindness and reassurance he inspires in those he cares for.

The Outstanding Patient Experience Award is one of the Trust’s annual staff awards and is unique because nominations come directly from patients, families and carers who wish to recognise members of staff who have made a difference to their experience of care.

One patient, who had been treated by Brian following tongue cancer surgery, wrote:

“I’m biased because he literally saved my life mentally and physically, but while waiting for a follow-up appointment I overheard another patient talking about how lucky they were to be seeing Mr Bisase.

“As they left, the lady stopped and said to me, ‘He is such a lovely man, you’ll be okay.’ What star quality is that, to enable a complete stranger to offer such confident comfort to another?”

The patient said the interaction had stayed with them and reflected the confidence, trust and reassurance Brian inspires in those he cares for.

Commenting on the award, Brian said:

“I am incredibly honoured and humbled to receive this award. It is especially meaningful because the nomination came from a patient. Supporting people through what can often be an uncertain and difficult time is a privilege, and I am grateful for the trust that patients place in me and the wider team. This recognition reflects the commitment of everyone involved in caring for our patients and I would like to sincerely thank those who took the time to nominate me.”

Liz Blackburn, Acting Chief Nursing Officer, at Queen Victoria Hospital, said:

“Every day, our staff strive to provide the highest standards of care, but it is particularly meaningful when patients and their loved ones take the time to tell us about the difference someone has made to them. The nominations we received this year were incredibly moving and are a wonderful reminder of the compassion, kindness and dedication shown by colleagues across QVH. Together, they demonstrate the positive impact our staff have on patients and those closest to them every day.

“Brian’s nomination is especially powerful because it highlights not only the care he provides, but also the confidence and reassurance he inspires in patients. To hear another patient tell a stranger that they would be okay speaks volumes about the impact he has on those in his care. We are delighted to see him recognised in this way and would like to congratulate him on this well-deserved award.”

Brian received the award at Queen Victoria Hospital’s annual Star Awards, which celebrate colleagues and teams who have made an exceptional contribution to patients, services and one another. The event was supported by Queen Victoria Hospital Charity, whose fundraising helps make recognition initiatives such as the Star Awards possible.

The Outstanding Patient Experience Award is determined entirely through patient nominations and celebrates colleagues who go above and beyond to make a positive difference to patients and those closest to them.
