QVH Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre celebrates 14 years of vital support for people living with and beyond cancer

Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre is celebrating 14 years of making a meaningful difference to people affected by cancer, offering comfort, expert guidance and a welcoming space when it is needed most.

Over the past year, the Centre supported 2,657 people, including patients, their families, carers, friends and healthcare professionals. This is more than 100 people more than the previous year, reflecting its growing reputation as a trusted, community-wide resource.

In fact, its reach now extends far beyond the hospital: half of the people who used the Centre last year were not patients of Queen Victoria Hospital, demonstrating how many individuals actively seek out its support, advice and the warm, inclusive environment created by the team.

The Centre offers a rich mix of services designed to support people at every stage of their cancer journey. These include drop‑in information and support, complementary therapy, popular group sessions like Tea and Talk, community outreach and physical activity groups such as Yoga and Walk and Talk. These activities play an important role in both prehabilitation and rehabilitation, helping people prepare for treatment, stay strong and maintain their wellbeing throughout and beyond cancer.

Always evolving to meet the needs of the community, the Centre has expanded its offer once again this year. Tai Chi was introduced last week, and Art Therapy will launch next month, further broadening the emotional, creative and physical support available.

The Centre is also a key part of the hospital’s wider support for people living with and after treatment. This includes guidance on healthy eating, staying active, emotional wellbeing, lifestyle changes, financial advice and information on symptoms to look out for. These personalised resources empower people to maintain strength, reduce fatigue, support recovery and improve their overall quality of life.

Abigail Jago, Acting Chief Executive Officer at QVH, said:
“For 14 years our QVH Cancer Support and Information Centre has been a lifeline for thousands of people, offering not only information and practical guidance, but also compassion, reassurance and a sense of community. I am continually inspired by the team’s dedication to helping people at every stage of their cancer journey and would like to thank them and our amazing volunteers for their unwavering commitment and kindness.”
