Cancer patients rate QVH among the best in England for personalised care and support

Patients receiving cancer care at Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (QVH) have rated the hospital among the very best in the country for the quality of care, communication and support they receive, according to the latest National Cancer Patient Experience Survey.

The survey, carried out by Picker on behalf of NHS England, is designed to monitor national progress on cancer care and provide information that helps hospitals improve the experience of patients undergoing cancer treatment.

The latest survey involved 130 NHS trusts across England. Of the 134,285 people invited to take part, 64,268 responded, giving a national response rate of 48%.

The results showed that QVH achieved the highest scores nationally in a number of key areas reflecting patient-centred care, including helping patients stay in contact with their care team, involving them in decisions about treatment, supporting families and carers, building confidence and trust in staff, and ensuring patients are treated with dignity and respect throughout their care journey.

QVH achieved the highest score nationally in a number of areas including:

  • 98% of patients said they were always treated with respect and dignity while in hospital.
  • 95% of patients found it very or quite easy to contact their main contact person.
  • 90% of patients said their family, or someone close to them, was definitely able to talk to a member of the team looking after them in hospital.
  • 91% of patients had confidence and trust in all of the team looking after them during their stay in hospital.
  • 84% of patients said they were always involved in decisions about their care and treatment whilst in hospital.

Overall patients rated their care 8.9 out of 10.

The results build on QVH’s strong performance in previous years and reflect the Trust’s continuing commitment to providing compassionate, personalised care for cancer patients and their loved ones.

Liz Blackburn, Acting Chief Nursing Officer at QVH, said: “To receive this level of positive feedback from our patients is something we are extremely proud of. These results reflect the compassion, commitment and teamwork shown by colleagues across QVH every day.

“We know that a cancer diagnosis can be life-changing, so it’s particularly encouraging to hear that patients felt supported and valued throughout their care. I would like to thank both our patients for sharing their experiences and our staff for the exceptional care they provide.”
