New video helps children feel ready for surgery at QVH

Young patients coming to Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (QVH) for an operation can now see exactly what to expect thanks to a new video created with the help of one of our patients.

The video, Welcome to Peanut Ward!, follows Emily, a young QVH patient, as she takes viewers through her journey at the hospital, from arriving on the ward and meeting staff through to going to theatre, recovering after surgery and returning home.

Designed for children and families preparing for an operation under general anaesthetic, the film shows exactly what happens on the day of surgery, helping young patients understand what to expect before they arrive at hospital.

Emily explains in the film: “I had an operation here and it wasn’t as scary as it sounds. I hope by telling you about it, it might help you get ready for the day and help you not to worry.”

Created by the paediatric team on Peanut Ward, the video takes children behind the scenes of a typical day-case operation, from admission through to going home.

Emily explains: “You really don’t need to worry. You’re going to be okay.”

The video covers every stage of a child’s hospital visit, including arriving at QVH, meeting members of the care team, preparing for surgery, recovery and going home. Families can watch the film together before their appointment, helping children become familiar with the environment and understand what will happen on the day

Dr Sarah Bailey, Consultant Anaesthetist at QVH, who was involved in making the video, said:

“We know that coming into hospital for surgery can feel daunting for children and their families, particularly when they don’t know what to expect. This video helps bring the experience to life in a friendly and reassuring way, showing children each step of their journey through the eyes of another young patient.

“We are incredibly grateful to Emily and her mum for giving up their time to help create this resource. Their generosity and willingness to share their experience will help many children and families feel more informed, more prepared and hopefully a little less anxious as they get ready for their surgery at QVH.”

The project was made possible thanks to support from Queen Victoria Hospital Charity, whose funding supports projects and initiatives that enhance patient care and experience beyond what NHS funding alone can provide.

The film is one of a number of ways QVH is helping children, young people and their families feel informed, supported and reassured before coming into hospital.
