QVH invests in latest technology for cataract surgery

Patients undergoing cataract surgery at our hospital are benefiting from investment in the latest surgical technology for the hospital’s specialist Corneoplastic service.

QVH is one of a small number of NHS trusts to have the new UNITY cataract surgery platform, giving its specialist surgeons greater precision, control and stability during cataract procedures.

For patients, the technology is designed to support safe, precise and efficient surgery, whether they are having a routine cataract operation or require more complex specialist care. The system allows surgeons to precisely control pressure and fluid flow within the eye during an operation, while also helping them remove the cataract efficiently.

Artemis Matsou, Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in cornea, cataract and refractive surgery at QVH, said:

“Introducing this new technology is a really exciting development for our cataract service. It gives us very precise control during surgery and enables us to remove the cataract efficiently, helping us provide the best possible surgical care for our patients.

“This is particularly valuable at QVH because of the number of complex cataract, corneal and anterior segment cases we manage, but the benefits are not limited to complex surgery. Patients having more routine cataract procedures can benefit too.

“It is an important investment in modern cataract surgery and will help us continue to deliver high-quality specialist care for a wide range of patients.”

The new equipment will complement other specialist technology already used by QVH’s Corneoplastic service, including the hospital’s OCT microscope.
