Hand therapy

What is Hand Therapy?

Hand Therapy is a specialism of Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy.  Therapists who practice in this area are passionate about hand and upper limb conditions, so focus their energy and skills on treating this small, but vitally important, part of the body.

Goals of hand therapy are often to relieve pain, increase movement, function and strength, decrease swelling and scars, promote wound healing, improve sensation,  enable a return to work and leisure activities and provide information and education to help patients manage their conditions.

At QVH, we treat all injuries and conditions of the hand and upper limb in both adults and children.

What does treatment include?

At the first appointment a thorough assessment of the hand and individual’s needs will take place.  Leading from this, treatment may include, but is not limited to, exercises, splints, massage, sensory re-education, electrotherapy, thermal modalities etc.  The therapist may provide hands-on treatment in the session, but it is essential that in order to achieve a good outcome patients complete the regular home programme/exercises with which they will be provided.
